I compile some initial facts in this report to ensure
your website isn't breaking some basic rules that are simple,
but critical NOT to over-looked!
|
| 1) Maintentance |
Many people believe that once a website
is created, your done! That's simply not the case; you need to keep
the site interesting with additional "value added" content.
Remember, when it comes to the internet - Content is King!
Don't EVER forget that! If someone has visited your
site and then returns to find nothing new, chances are they'll determine
you have nothing new to offer.
Repeat visitors to your site are important, so make your site
interesting with relative information to your target audiance,
you'll gain more credibilty and be looked at in your industry
as an expert. That's exactly what you WANT. People feel more
confident BUYING from experts.
|
| 2) The Lack Of Planning |
The purpose of your site
wasn't planned out. Many companies fall into the
trap of "We need to have a website
because our competitor has one". If you create a website
without planning, you may actually be benefiting your competitors!
Decide what needs to be done to make
the website an asset to the company. With proper planning
your website can be a very powerful and low cost marketing tool,
as well as a resource for existing clients.
|
| 3) Non-Functional |
| This often happens when a site
is just developed, you upload what is done to the internet and then
simply forget about it! You might have the approach "I'll
finish that later" and/or the links within the site weren't tested
properly.
This is one way to kill your
online business. If customers can't find what they are looking
for QUICKLY they'll hit the back button in a heartbeat!
|
| 4) Non-Informative |
|
"We have been in the business
75 years and we our licensed to..." How many times have you
seen this? Maybe you have it on your website right now?
Yes this is good information but when someone arrives at your site
all they're interested in is: "What's in it for ME!"
THEN, once they've seen what you have to offer they will look at
your experience and references.
|
| 5) Confusing |
|
As you've probably seen many times
before, page overload can and WILL cause confusion.
If the design of your website is too busy or has lots of
different colors, fonts and flashing banners; a visitor will be
overwhelmed, won't find what they're looking for and
will no doubt leave your site.
IMPORTANT: If the visitor has to click here, then click
there and then follow a link somewhere else; they'll get frustrated
and AGAIN leave your site. If they CAN'T FIND what they
are looking for within the first 20 seconds, chances are
you've lost them forever.
Keep the three-click rule in mind whenever possible.
If a visitor needs to go beyond THREE clicks to get information,
they'll never get there.
|
| 6) Load Speed |
|
Size does matter! Yes you want to have
a good looking site but if it takes too long to load most
visitors simply won't wait. It's generally a good idea
to optimize all images on all pages, especially the main
INDEX page so that the whole page loads within a 10 seconds time
frame.
Speak to your web developer about this
issue, they'll understand what you're talking about, but don't just
except what they say, make sure they have truly
optimised it as best as possible.
|
| 7) Little Or No Promotion |
|
Ok. So you have a website! And who
knows about it? Many companies spend thousands of dollars
with web developers creating wonderful looking website and
simply forget to promote it!
It's not enough just putting your web address on
